Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) uses smaller incisions than standard open surgery on the bones of your spine. Available for some types of spine surgeries, it has become increasingly popular because of the many benefits patients experience with this innovative procedure.
What are the benefits?
Spine surgeon Dr. Charla Fischer is a proponent of performing MISS when patients have that option. There are a number of appealing benefits to having this type of procedure instead of open surgery, many of which are a result of the smaller incisions required for MISS. Some of these advantages include:
- Less trauma to the body’s tissues
- Less risk of infection
- Reduced blood loss
- Less scarring
- Reduced hospital stay
- Faster recovery, often as little as two weeks
How should I prepare for surgery?
Preparing for MISS is much like preparing for any surgery in which you will undergo general anesthesia. There will be lab work beforehand and Dr. Fischer will review any medication you’re taking to advise you whether any should be discontinued prior to surgery. You will also be advised about washing the surgical area before surgery and avoiding things like smoking or alcohol. You may also be provided with prescriptions to fill before surgery so that they are available when you return home. Dr. Fischer and the hospital will provide any further instructions specific to your procedure and hospital stay.
What about recovery?
You’ll spend the first few hours after surgery in recovery and then will be moved to a hospital room. Pain medications and antibiotics are typically routine for patients after MISS. The hospital staff will follow your surgeon’s orders about getting you up walking and moving around. The length of the hospital stay could be up to a few days depending on the procedure and your condition. After you return home, your physician will advise you about follow-up visits and instructions about care and activities. If you learn you need spine surgery, schedule a consultation with New York spine surgeon Dr. Charla Fischer to find out if MISS is right for you.
